I am not hiring nursing employees

As a retired nurse, I have really enjoyed being home with my family. I have people ask me if I am hiring other nurses to work for me. I don’t have employees. I don’t work all the time but I do work every day. I have had people tell me that I need to have days “off” and have work hours and I quickly found out that it irritated me to have a schedule. I worked a tight schedule for over 25 years and I really don’t want to clock watch any more.

I have talked to other nurses who have reached out to me looking to get started but they think they are working for me. Instead, they are learning how to work for themselves. Which is a new mindset for most people. I know it was for me.

Why did they reach out?

Lots of people want change, some want to complain about their situation but change keeps them trapped in the box. Then there are those that want to change and are terrified of shifting gears but do it anyway.

Messages from Nurse Friends

I get facebook messages like this one from this week. “I need to get caught up from Christmas and I am excited to get started working with you”

or this one from a nurse friend –

“How much is it to get started?” When they ask the cost up front they hear the number so they can disqualify the ability to get started by saying  “I need to ask my husband. or “I don’t have the money”.

or this one from a nurse friend –

“I am working two jobs and my husband is working two jobs and I just don’t have the money.”

My heart bleeds to hear these excuses because I know these are the very people who need to get started more than anyone. The thought that a fellow register nurse is working two full-time jobs and can not make ends meet is scary. Let alone the thought of the time they are missing with their kids.

I have nurse friends who are working 80 hours a week to save money to go on vacation! So they can come back and work some more to pay off what they spent.

There is a better way. What makes people do things the hardest way possible?

I had an interview with nursing.org this week and the topic was what would I say to a burnt out nurse. I said “it’s time for a shift.” Not that you want to or need to give up nursing but it is time to give the OT a break and learn how to discover your passion. The one that used to help people and leave work full of pride in what you did. There can be a passion that is not nurse related.

When I retired in 2014 I was so burnt out I was bitter. So bitter on my last day of work I walked to my truck and never turned my head to look behind me leaving the hospital. I was tired. I was tired of the game, the BS, the politics, the ranking issues, the meetings, the back biting, I was so done.

What I missed was helping people. I enjoy interacting with other people. I enjoy helping people, finding the answer to something they are missing. I missed my co-workers and the funny conversations we had. Nurses have a weird sense of humor if you are a nurse or work with nurses comment below you know what I mean.

I wanted more!!

I wanted to teach other nurses how to have both worlds and be happy and love what they do. Seeing burnt out nurses who are working two jobs and struggling makes me sad.

I have a system that can help you learn what you don’t know. If you are reading this you are teachable.

  1. What a fabulous post. My career path was a different one to your Angela but I recognise and relate to being “burnt out”. You’re right, there is a better way and I think many of your nurse colleagues will see that more from reading your post.

    Yes it is a high rate of burnt out in the medical field. I hope I can shift that for hundreds of profssionals

  5. WOW!! I always knew from just watching nurses whenever I was in a hospital that they were always busy. But, I never thought about how stressful that job can be. Thanks for sharing and opening my eyes. Now, I have a new set of people to prospect 😉

  6. You never know what someone is going through on the job. That is why when you are there with family be observant for care but also remember she/he has at least 10 more people to take care. Nursing is not for the light hearted

  7. Nursing is definitely not for the faint of hearted. I totally give it up to nurses having to watch over so many and multi-task so much at the same time, kudos to you Angela and so glad you were able to dig your way out, awesome share!
