What are you doing with your lunch break? Most people gather in the lunchroom with their co-workers and talk about their busy day and rehash it over and over. I tried this for the first month I was on day shift after working midnight shift for 21 years.
It left me feeling drained and more exhausted than before lunch.
I started taking walks to get my miles in for the day but found myself thinking of what I had to do when I got home in my business. The walk left me frustrated because now I had a longer list of “to do’s” than before I started walking. (I took notes on my blackberry as I walked)
Approximately 42 percent of survey respondents report socializing with workers, 29 percent spend time working, 27 percent surf the internet or spend time on social media, 25 percent catch up on personal phone calls and emails, 25 percent run errands, and 18 percent exercise or take a walk. (A small percentage read or do nothing other than eat.)
I began looking for places to sit that was quiet and where I wouldn’t be disturbed. I have sat is old rooms that were used for storage on top of dusty boxes, a swing out in the middle of the hospital yard, In my truck, and drove to the local airport and sat outside the fenced area to write.
I kept yellow post-it notes in my jacket work pocket so if I had an idea I would jot it down ready to blog on my lunch break.
I became super protective of my lunch hour. I quickly found if I tried to sit in my office to write someone would always knock on the door or walk in and I would lose track of what I was doing (squirrel syndrome) I made sure I left my work area.
The biggest excuse I hear from people who I talk to about starting a business is “I don’t have time.” But yet they could tell me who was having a sale, and what was on TV. Even if I had a list of things to do when I got home like any other working mom. I had my lunch hour at work that I couldn’t be my kid’s taxi, I couldn’t wash clothes, or multi-task and cook supper. I had 6o mins to sit somewhere and I made the choose to not sit and stare a more food I didn’t need to eat or have conversations that drained me.
I had this down to the minute on how long I had for lunch. At 11 AM it would take me 5 minutes to walk across campus, get in my truck, and drive across the road to the airport. 10 mins on a good day. I would flip open my iPad and use the audio dictation or write in the notes session. Then I would turn on my cell phone internet to email it to myself ready to add to the WordPress blog when I got home.
6 Tips for Efficient Blogging During Your Lunch Hour
- The key to your lunch hour is to use all of your time efficiently. Keep a mini notepad in your pocket so it is easy to write ideas down. I always thought I would remember them until I sat down ready to write and would go blank. Takes notes
- Blogging has to be scheduled and added to your to-do list. You can’t think about it. You have to do it. You will not fill like writing all the time but it is part of your job. Get it done.
- Shut doors (lock them), turn off your phone messages, turn off social media, find a place that you will not be disturbed.
- Don’t forget it is your lunch hour. Pack a lunch or have something with you to eat while you work.
- Use a blog template so you know the lead paragraph, images you plan to use, the main point of the post, and your call to action
- Last but not least you can pay someone to format it on your blog. Then all you would have to do is email it to your assistant.
Yes, there were days I was like anyone else I would go to my writing spot and I would kick the seat back and shut my eyes to rest. Most days I took care of business.
