What it takes to be a good leader

leadershipBeing a good leader isn’t easy. While a leader’s actions may be scrutinized when things are going bad, it is their leadership qualities that shine through the worst of times. Network Marketing, Multi-Level Marketing, Direct Selling. These names all describe the same system, which we will just call “MLM.” Leadership in network marketing is what I will be referring too.

There are frankly so many different opinions about what it takes to be a leader that it would take multiple books (much less one blog post) to even begin to cover the topic. In fact, just type the words “leader” or “leadership” into the Amazon or google search function. The number of books and articles that come up is staggering.

To be clear, MLM is a viable home-based business opportunity. Anyone interested in selling a product to generate income has the ability to achieve success. With that said, it is crucial to research and investigate the company and products thoroughly to make sure that it’s not a scam, and also, that it’s a product and system you feel you can promote. There are many single-level marketing (selling products without a recruiting component) companies where the likelihood of generating income is much higher than typical MLM statistics.

A leader is constantly facing challenges, the biggest of which is how to be a great leader, every day. Great leadership is the foundation of any organization, big or small because, without it, growth is impossible. It is not the leader’s responsibility to grow your business but to support you and move you in the direction to find success. It is your job to do the work.

Leverage your team

As your business grows, you’ll realize that you can’t be around for every decision, and you won’t be fully qualified to perform every position. Using a Facebook group, or a newsletter will help you leverage the message out to large groups of people.

You have to be your best YOU. They have to be their best THEM.

That’s why it’s crucial to leverage the strengths of your team. This means finding each strength, trusting their expertise and making the most of their abilities. Find out what they’re passionate about and help them lead a project if they show leadership ability. Empower them to succeed in meaningful work that supports the communities goals and objectives.

5 Most Important Qualities of a Leader

  1. Have a vision
  2. Share your vision
  3. What is your overall goal? Do you have a cause you are working for, a mission other than money?
  4. Be competent. Do what you say you will do.
  5. Lead by example. Never ask your team to do more than you are willing to do yourself.

If you want to be a great leader, you need to do the things you’re asking other people to do first. And then after you do it, you can show your team how to do it.

Walk your talk.  Do it first, and then show others the way.

At some point, you have to have a certain level of competence.  You have to reach a level where you can lead, train, present, or whatever skill that you want to become known for.  Building up your competence gives people faith in you, and they feel they can follow you safely.

Running a business, learning to lead, building a team is not for sissies. It is for the committed even when the results aren’t looking the way you want them to look.

You have to be coached to grow.

Build your business with systems that help you grow, learn and push yourself. There is more to business than getting started. Personal development is a large part of  MLM growth.
