Small Talk

My very first marketing event that I ever attended – about 23 years ago!

It was in a hotel with about 30-40 people. I had my 2-year-old in tow, sitting on the back row with a backpack full of toys.

I was a single mom, looking for the dream everyone was talking about from the front of the room. I wanted to pay for things without asking my checkbook if it was ok. I was focused on extra money, not big rolling bills of cash.

Then it happened, right after the training sessions that day, the training rolled into the ‘after event’ networking party.

Small talk hype – It made my right eye start twitching.

When the small talk starts

The ‘What do you do?’ questions made a grueling appearance

The ‘Here’s my business card exchanges started (yes, back when people handed those out – no cell phones in sight)

The handshakes with empty promises of referrals started making their rounds.

Everyone turned into sales/promotional zombies and started acting a lil’ bit crazy and weird. Half of them were blowing smoke or over-dramatizing what they were doing in business. No one had a plan they could explain. No one had a method or blueprint. They were all hype.

Ughhh… small talk is so not my jam

To this day, small talk makes my skin crawl listening to people talk smack.

I started looking for something else to build a business besides small talk. I knew this was not going to be my lane to stay in. I needed to figure out an introvert-friendly way to do it.

One that doesn’t require me to act “out of character” pretending to be someone I’m not.

And guess what? I found a way!

One that works whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or Ambivert

One that could stand the test of any algorithm change or social media, one that focuses on me, and one I have control over.

Social media can be exhausting, checking in like an addict. And it only requires you to keep staring at your screen for part of the day. While still human with a family, hobbies, and a day job.
