Time for a Facebook facelift.
Most people who use Facebook don’t realize how important the first impression that people see when they come to your profile really is. Most people who use Facebook are on their mobile device and they are scrolling. To catch and keep someone’s attention you need to put a few things in place to get them to pause long enough to get to know you.
I have seen a lot of profiles that have joined a network marketing company and immediately posted it on Facebook because they were excited, anxious to tell the world about their new adventure.
People either turn their profile into a billboard posting pictures and links to the company page or they turn the “about me” section into an advertisement section.
Guess what happens?
People keep scrolling.
Your Timeline — is a scrapbook of your life.
This is a stream of information about you — the photos you’ve posted, all your status updates, the apps you’ve used, even the places you’ve visited on a world map — that scrolls all the way back to your birth. ~ Mashable
About me, the section is your story
The more information you have completed on your profile the greater your chances are to get to know people who can connect with you. It also gives you the chance to show up in search engines for bigger results because of the keywords you use about yourself.
Your Facebook profile is a gold mine for keywords. People are searching on the wild wild web for everything under the sun. You have what someone is looking, for now, to help them find you.
Your profile picture and the cover photo
These two images show up on google, in the newsfeed, on timeline post, comments, and pages. This is how people get to know you and recognize who you are. Your face on Facebook is super valuable to your connection to people.
If someone sends a friend request to me that has flowers, babies, animals, sunsets or a company logo. I delete them. I get lots of spam request daily so the first thing I notice is if they have a real person look or if we have friends in common.
A close up of you from the shoulders up is a good judgment on the size of the photo to place in your profile image.
The cover photo is the same as your profile – it should not have your company logo – it should have something related to you. I change Facebook cover photo about once a month to get new engagement and conversations started but it is never about my company.
Your cover photo is the attention grabber for people to get to know you. It can be of your family – it can be about a trip you have been on. It can be quotes.
This is a place you can highlight your special moments in life.
When you are online the only way to connect with people is through pictures and conversation, which we call “Content”.
To get conversations started pictures say way more than we can as a conversation starter.
Facebook Changes Features
There are features on your profile like adding your birthday, where you went to school, places you have lived or traveled too. It gives people things to connect to you with. Who knows someone you have not seen in 20 years can find you with a search on Facebook if you have your profile set up to connect with those keywords.
Example: I like to look up Angela Brooks on Facebook and connect with people with the same name. It is an easy conversation and funny to talk to Angela Brooks at the same time.
Simple Tweaks could be money in your pocket.
Some people will post things on their profile and get no comments or no likes.
I personally remove those post and try again.
When someone does reply I hit the love button and leave a comment back. Every time you use the “love” button over the “like” button it ranks higher for the Facebook ratings. Leaving a comment and starting a dialog tells Facebook that people like that comment and push it higher in your newsfeed for more people to see.
Every time you leave a comment to keep in mind Facebook is watching how you interact with your friends. If they are talking to you and you ignore them. Facebook doesn’t see a reason to keep showing other people what you posted.
Set yourself up for success. Treat your Facebook like a business connection opportunity. You don’t have to toss your business out there and hope and pray someone talks to you. You can set it up to happen every day to see if someone is open to what you have to offer but first…
Start a conversation.
Pictures, comments, and post are how you can connect with people by just being you. You don’t need to change who you are. Set yourself up for success, use keywords, and get your profile cleaned up.
1. Add your picture
2. An updated cover profile about you
3. Fill out the about me section
Leave comments – Start comments – be friendly
