Building a Business That Adapts

Everybody sees you as a leader online and thinks you have it all together. I sat in my laundry room this morning and cried over a greenie (a dog snack). I reached into the bag like I have done for 10 years and pulled out two. I only needed one this morning for my 14-year-old dog, who was waiting.

I fell apart.

I must learn to adapt to the new routine, which led me to write this blog post.

Building your online business is a thrilling rollercoaster. You’re fueled by passion, making progress, and then BAM! Life throws a curveball. It could be a demanding job, family needs, or unexpected challenges. You might feel overwhelmed, questioning, “Can I really do this?”

The answer is a resounding YES. The key lies in adaptation. We can’t control life’s curveballs, but we can create a business that bends with them.

Adapting Through Thick and Thin

Take my story, for example. I launched my business while working a brutal night shift, three days a week. On top of that, I had two young boys in sports and a family to care for.

Exhaustion was my constant companion, yet I adapted. I carved out time for work when I could, juggling responsibilities with grit and determination.

Then, the economy shifted. Consumer behavior changed, but my business didn’t miss a beat. Why? Because I adapted. I learned how to pivot my offerings to meet the new needs of my audience.

Adaptation is the Backbone of Success in Business

Building a business isn’t about excuses or blame. It’s about learning to navigate challenges, not run from them. You can find strength in a supportive community.

Surround yourself with people who inspire you and are “walking the walk” in your field. Learn from their experiences and adapt their strategies to fit your unique situation.

Like a walker seeking a training partner, find your “business tribe.” They speak a different language than people who need to build a business. You can grow and learn from each other’s successes and setbacks.

Beyond the Money: Building a Better You

Business is more than just a paycheck. It’s a journey of self-discovery. While the initial drive may be financial, the rewards extend far beyond. You’ll develop resilience, resourcefulness, and a growth mindset. Building a business can be a catalyst for personal transformation.

The Power of Systems

Life throws its fair share of curveballs, some harder than others. When I was caring for my ailing father for the last 30 days, I had to adapt once again. With a heavy heart, I set up a workspace in his room, allowing me to stay connected to my business, even on a reduced schedule. The key? Systems.

Similar situations unfolded eight days later when my beloved dog Ace became sick, and I had to let him go. While my heart ached, the systems I had in place kept my business running. Leads continued to come in, a testament to the power of automation and planning.

Building Freedom Through Structure

The concept of “building freedom” in business boils down to creating systems that don’t rely solely on your time. Think teams, automation tools, and efficient processes. These elements allow you to focus on higher-level tasks and personal growth—even when life demands your attention.

A Community of Support

Losing my father and then my dog 8 days later was a profoundly personal journey. To navigate my grief, I found solace in journaling and sharing my experiences on social media. The connection and support I received from friends, family, and even strangers were overwhelming in the best way possible. It reminded me that we’re not alone in our struggles.

Adapt. Thrive. Grow.

Adaptability is the heart of entrepreneurial success. By embracing challenges and building systems that can flex, you create a business that thrives alongside you. My story is a testament to this.
