Sleep Disorders: Does Less Sleep Really Make You Age

Sleep – The Anti-Aging Pill

I have always worked the midnight shift for over 2o years. I know sleep is important but I often went with out to participate in family events or do the things that were going on in the day time hours – then at night feel like I was going to crash, and did.

Sleep is one key link to staying health, younger and focused. Just as your vehicle’s
engine requires fresh, clean oil every 3,000 miles to run smoothly, your body
requires time to repair. When we sleep, our cells undergo repair or are replaced
by newly generated, healthier cells – so that  the vital functions operate efficiently.
This deep sleep process reverses the aging curse every night

I got an email from Shane Ellison today about sleep and aging that I found very interesting. For many years I have used products to help boost my energy and protect my health working the long night shift hours and it has worked for me. However, nothing replaces good sleep.

Shocking Link Between Sleep and Aging

Shane said: Recent studies on sleep have once again confirmed my stance on sleep:  Deep sleep slows the aging process.

500 participants were monitored over a 5 year period. Calcification (a disruptive process in the arteries that leads to heart disease) was measured regularly.

Researchers found that those who got deeper, more relaxing sleep, had “lower calcification incidence independent of examined potential mediators and confounders.”

In fact, just one small increase in sleep duration, had a huge benefit! Check this quote out direct from the scientists who published the results:

“We have found a robust and novel association between objectively measured sleep duration and 5-year incidence of coronary artery calcification. One hour more of sleep decreased the estimated odds of calcification by 33%.”

Decreasing calcification and heart disease by that much is far better than any one single drug or even nutritional supplement!

But getting proper sleep does more than ward off heart disease.

Deep sleep curbs appetite throughout the day.  It conquers depression and anxiety.  And it also yields “hormonal intelligence,” thereby balancing our hormones naturally.

  1. Oh, don't I know it! I had insomnia for a year and boy did that ever age me! It also made me appreciate every night of good sleep it get. And not to sound like a commercial, but both the Lavender and the Peace and Calming essential oils really help!

  2. I totally agree Nancy – I used to toss and turn at night because my brain would not shut off and I could not get into that good rested sleep – Lavender has helped me so much get that deep sleep

  3. Thank you for sharing this important info Angela…I really needed to be reminded of the value of sleep! I am one that is guilty of giving up sleep time to "get it all done" and then I pay for it of course. You have motivated me to be more careful not to deprive my body of the much needed rest it requires. Blessings~

  5. Great post!  I actually take a power nap every afternoon though at night I don't sleep as much as I should because I'm more of a night person… is that bad??
