Options for Nurses

I recently came across a thought-provoking sign on Facebook that sparked a conversation among nurses. They were jokingly discussing the prospect of working until they reached 80, but beneath the humor, it was clear that they were concerned about the financial challenges that retirement could bring.

After dedicating 27+ years to full-time nursing, the idea of relying on a reduced retirement paycheck was disheartening, considering their struggles.

Nursing is a demanding career that takes a toll on the body and mind. The long hours, physical strain on the knees and back, and the mental exhaustion of keeping up with a busy shift pattern can be overwhelming. Despite the challenges, many nurses love their profession and find fulfillment in caring for others.

However, retirement for nurses should not be about simply sitting in a rocking chair and doing nothing. It’s important to have a plan that allows for financial stability and continued personal growth.

As I approached retirement in 2014 at 47 yr old, I started to evaluate my options. I realized that I didn’t want to settle for a meager retirement income or continue working a full-time job for someone else.

I was a nurse for decades—and I knew how to work hard. But I also knew I wasn’t going to burn everything down without a plan.

I built my side business while I was still working full-time. It took me four and a half years to build something solid enough to leave my full-time nursing career behind. And I did it by working smarter, not faster.

Years ago, I dreamed of being in business for myself, but the fear of failure held me back. However, listening to my fellow nurses discussing retirement plans made me realize that simply having a “deal” or side gig wouldn’t provide the financial security I desired.

Business is more than just making money; it has the power to transform lives and make dreams come true. It allows you to serve others and create opportunities for yourself.

Your desire to explore new possibilities didn’t come out of thin air; it was a message delivered to you. Embrace it and consider what your retirement plans look like. What do you envision as the average nursing retiring age?
