Entrepreneur’s Thoughts on Snow Days

Enjoy your work from home laptop job.

As a Entrepreneur who works from home, we went to bed knowing we would wake up to snow and ice. What we didn’t know was that we would wake up at 5:00 AM with no electricity. The house was cooling down and we had to get up and get dressed while we had some warmth in the house to see what we needed to do.

Thank goodness I didn’t have a job to commute too. I used to have a 30 mile drive one way to work in all kinds of weather. Snow days like today I don’t miss the stress of getting out on the road and hoping #1 I stay on the road #2 a crazy driver doesn’t hit me #3 The stress of an hour and a half snowy road drive.

With 6 inches of snow on the ground and it still snowing my husband and I fixed a cup of Folders single serve bag of coffee with hot water warmed on the gas stove and a cup of oatmeal by candle light. We had to sit and wait for it to get daylight to see what we needed to work on outside.

As long as I have power, internet and a laptop there is no reason on snowy day why I can’t work from home.

With us living 5 miles out in the country, and at the end of the electrical connection we didn’t know how soon the lineman would get to us. However, at the break of dawn we heard a loud truck on the other side of the woods and a bright yellow jacket walking down the driveway. I hollered “Good Morning!” and raised my cup to the man smiling coming down the road. He had been up since 4 AM on calls and we were the first report. He had us up and warm by 9AM.

In the time that I had no electric or internet to do any work. I slid my foot in my boots and headed outside.

A snow day is better than Christmas holiday break. No big meals to cook, nowhere to go, just hanging out at home and enjoy the view. Our motto is as long as we have coffee, hot chocolate, cheese and crackers or soup we are happy people.

Working from Home

Successful Entrepreneurs need to know when to push forward and when to sit back and relax and enjoy the advantage of being able to work from home. My son of course is out of school, my husband was not at work. There were so many days over the last 25 years I worked at the hospital dangerous ice roads to get to my job where we would work short because of people not being able to get to work (and some didn’t try).

You may not have noticed I said “relax” and not clock out. The freedom we have for working at home as a entrepreneur means our deadlines are different and we are not clock watching all day. You still have work to do and snow days are the perfect example of what those self-employment days offer. Most people have two or three gears when it comes to work: “on,” “off,” and maybe “overtime”

Have an extra cup of warm beverage, stay in your Pj’s. The rest of the world has found a day to slow down and relax and working from home you need to do the same. Enjoy your work from home laptop job as a entrepreneur and the snow day activities.

  1. Handled the weather like the pro you are. So true Angela, thanks for reminding others that its just snow, and that as long as you have internet, you can get ‘r’done

  2. Exactly! Especailly the point where you say ‘relax’ instead of clock out. The best part about working from home is the flexibility – but it can also be your WORST enemy if you don’t ‘stay the course’ 🙂

  3. we have no reason to not work an least an hour a day. Yes we need days we totally take off but it is simple to check in and do small task
