What AI readability actually means (and why visible is not the same as readable)
There are two different doors here. Visibility is whether the door opens. Readability is whether, once she is inside, a reader can find what she came for in a few seconds without reading the whole house.
An answer engine works the same way. It skims for a clear question and a clear answer sitting close together. When your best point is wrapped in a story and does not show up until halfway down, the engine gives up and quotes a page that made it easy. Good AI readability just means you made it easy.
What is AI readability?
AI readability is how easily an answer engine can find, understand, and lift a complete answer from your page. It comes down to clear question-style headings, a direct answer in the first sentence or two, short paragraphs, and one clean idea per chunk. Write so a rushed human can skim it, and AI can read it too.
What is the difference between AI visibility and AI readability?
Visibility is whether AI can reach and index your blog at all. Readability is whether, once it is there, it can pull a clear answer to quote. You can be fully visible and still unreadable, like a bright open shop where nothing is labeled. Fix visibility first, then readability, or you get seen and skipped.
How to audit your blog for AI readability in about 15 minutes
You do not need a developer or a plugin for this part. You need one post, five quiet minutes, and the short checklist below. Run it against your most important post first, the one you actually want AI to quote.
Placement is the whole game. A study of 100,000 AI citations found that 38 percent came from the first 100 words of a page, and pages that answered the question early were cited 45 percent of the time versus 23 percent for pages that made the reader wait. Your answer is either near the top or it is invisible.
The AI readability audit, line by line
1. The answer, up top. Under each heading, does a clear answer land in the first one or two sentences, before any story?
2. Headings are real questions. Are your headings the exact questions a person types, like “how do I start an email list,” instead of soft labels like “the beginning”?
3. One idea per paragraph. Can each short paragraph be lifted on its own and still make sense?
4. One clean list or set of steps. Is there at least one list a bot can grab whole?
5. Plain words, short sentences. Would a tired reader understand every sentence on the first pass?
6. One real number with a source. Did you back at least one claim with a fact and a link?
Those are the six checks. If a post passes four or more, AI can work with it. If it passes two or fewer, that is usually why a weaker page keeps getting quoted instead of yours.
How do I check if my blog is readable to AI?
Open your post and read only the first two sentences under each heading. If those two sentences answer the heading on their own, AI can lift them. If you have to scroll to find the answer, so does the engine, and it will usually quote someone else. The tool further down scores this for you in a few seconds.
How long does an AI readability audit take?
About 15 minutes for one post once you know what to look for. You are checking six things: answer placement, question headings, paragraph length, one clean list, plain sentences, and one sourced fact. Fixing what you find is usually faster than writing it was, because you are moving lines, not creating them.

On Where Your First Subscribers Actually Come From, one heading asks, “Do you need a big following to get email subscribers?” The line right under it reads, “No, you do not need a big following to get email subscribers. A following and a list are not the same thing, and the list is the one that matters.” A bot can lift that whole answer and name the source, because the question and the answer sit together.
Picture the same point with a heading like “my thoughts on growing,” and the real answer buried in the fourth paragraph after a story about your weekend. Same knowledge, same writer. One version gets quoted and one gets skipped. AI readability is almost never about what you know. It is about where you put it.
