Defining Your Target Market
The first thing you have to do is figure out who you want to serve and how you are going to serve them. In order to blog you have to know who you are writing too – like I am writing to you for example.
When you visit new blogs you can tell immediately if they have done their research of not. Thier blog posts are all over the place with lots of topics and none of them blend together.
Let’s say you want to talk to moms with toddlers. Toddlers are on the go and they need clothes that are comfortable, moveable but cute. She wants to feel pretty with as little effort as possible. You want to talk about items that go together, accessories that will match but get in the way of a baby, how to fix fast meals that are healthy.
Then a new reader comes to your site and the first post they see is about kayaking. Now they are totally confused and click away really quick and I am sure they won’t be back if it was a mom looking for simple ideas
In order to prevent this, you have to be clear on who you are talking too and focus. You can not blog about 2-3 other business on one blog and it is very very rare for someone to be able to keep more than one blog published on multiple topics.
The first two questions up there are extremely important. You need to figure out what you are passionate about. What’s life all about for you? What do you like to talk about? What are your values? What’s important to you? If you don’t base your blog around something you are passionate about, you will lose interest quickly.
Resources that you can tap in to start diving into your target
Social media is full of great content. You can listen to what your fans and friends talk about the most and write how to solve that problem if it is to your niche market.
Twitter has hashtags that associated with your market and follow the topics that are talked about the most. You can find great topics following hashtags.
Reddit and StumbledUpon are social platforms that are perfect for topics, blog titles and what people need help with.
AnswerThePublic.com – This is an awesome resource that provides you with questions that your target market is asking in Google and Bing. This is such a great service that, while it’s free now, it probably won’t be soon. It even allows you to export the information they give you in a very nice visual data sheet!
Find out where your target market hangs out and listen in.
